About the UPS Calculator

The UPS Calculator at upscalculator.org implements the exact formula from the official Gazette Notification dated 24 January 2025. All calculations match the official scenarios published by the government, making it the most accurate free UPS pension estimator available.

Section 1: Retirement Type

Select your retirement type at the top of the calculator:

  • Normal Superannuation: Retiring at mandatory age — pension starts immediately, requires 10+ years
  • FR 56(j) Retirement: Government-initiated retirement for public interest — requires 10+ years, pension starts immediately
  • Voluntary Retirement: Early retirement at your initiative — requires 25+ years, pension is deferred to normal superannuation date

Section 2: Salary Details

  • 12-Month Avg Basic Pay: The arithmetic mean of your basic pay in the 12 months immediately before retirement. This is the "P" in the pension formula. Do not include DA, HRA, or any other allowances — basic pay only.
  • Last Drawn Basic Pay: Your basic pay in the final month of service. Used only for the lump sum calculation (Basic Pay + DA at this point determines emoluments).
  • DA (%): The Dearness Allowance percentage applicable on your last date of service. Currently 53% (as of the official gazette example). This affects both the lump sum calculation and the estimated DR on your pension.
  • Medical Officer (NPA): If you are a Medical Officer, toggle this on and enter your Non-Practicing Allowance. NPA is included in basic pay for pension calculations per the official notification.

Section 3: Qualifying Service

  • Years: Complete years of qualifying service
  • Months: Additional months beyond complete years

Total qualifying service (in months) determines the "Q" variable. Q is capped at 300 months (25 years) for pension calculation purposes — service beyond 25 years doesn't increase the pension percentage but does increase the lump sum.

Section 4: Corpus Details

  • Individual Corpus (IC): Your actual accumulated corpus in the PRAN at retirement. Check your latest PFRDA statement for this figure.
  • Benchmark Corpus (BC): The notional corpus calculated by PFRDA. Also available on your PFRDA statement. If you haven't received this yet, enter the same value as IC for a conservative estimate.
  • Recouped Amount: If IC < BC and you have arranged for additional contributions to bridge the gap, enter the recouped amount here. The effective IC = min(IC + recouped, BC).

Section 5: Final Withdrawal

Use the slider to select the percentage of corpus you wish to withdraw as a final lump sum (0% to 60%). This amount is calculated from min(IC, BC). Each percentage point withdrawn permanently reduces your monthly pension by the same percentage.

Reading the Results

  • Monthly Assured Payout: Your guaranteed monthly pension amount (excluding DR)
  • Est. Monthly with DR: Estimated total monthly income including Dearness Relief at the current DA rate — this is your approximate actual take-home
  • Family Payout: 60% of admissible payout — what your spouse receives
  • Lump Sum Payment: The formula-based lump sum at retirement (separate from final withdrawal)
  • Final Withdrawal Amount: The one-time corpus withdrawal you receive
  • Excess Corpus Returned: If IC > BC, this additional amount is credited to your bank account
